What size are the hoses on a copper tap?

The end of the hoses are standard 1/2 female ends. The copper piping is plain piping, measured at 10mm width. Unfortunately the existing copper pipes that screw into the old tap won’t fit the new tap.

What is a compression fitting tap connector?

This is a compression fitting tap connector. The nut is tightened to the thread on the tap and there is a nut on the other end which contains an Olive. The Olive is fed over the end of the copper pipe and the nut tightened down onto it.

How does a push fit tap connector work?

This is a push fit, flexible tap connector with a built in isolation valve. Absolutely excellent for units where access is difficult. The chrome nut at the top connects to the tap thread after inserting a fibre washer (I) and the black end is simply pushed over either a chrome pipe (G) or a copper pipe (H).

Can You solder tap fittings to copper pipes?

Beware the ones with valves as some leak. If you have to fit any of them, try to have them nearly full length to the pipe they are joining to keep pipe end slack until tap end tightened, to avoid twisting it. Why not use brass fittings at copper pipes use solder tap fittings, try them in with pipes before soldering solder out of place?

What side of bench grinder to use ISO valves?

When I get a a supply of ISO valves I just use the flat side of the bench grinder and flatten them all. When you do lots it saves a bit of cash

What hose do I use to screwfix?

Pop down to screwfix with the flexi hose and they’ll give you the bit you want.

Do Screwfix have stock?

Some say good old screwfix … but no, they have none in stock, so it’ll be Wednesday before I see these.

What is a speed fit tap connector?

This is a Speed Fit tap connector where the brass nut tightens onto the thread of the tap and the pipe is pushed directly up into it. See the project link above to Speed Fit plumbing.

What is the chrome nut on a tap?

The chrome nut at the top connects to the tap thread after inserting a fibre washer (I) and the black end is simply pushed over either a chrome pipe (G) or a copper pipe (H).

Where is the olive fed?

The Olive is fed over the end of the copper pipe and the nut tightened down onto it. See our project on compression joints to see how this works. The fibre washer (I) can be seen sitting at the top of this connector.

Can you put a new fitting on top of an old fitting?

Sometimes, after being compressed in a used fitting for a while it is not easily seen, and even less easily removed but do not try to place a new one on top of an old one as it will reduce the thread available to tighten onto the tap. This can make it difficult and lead to cross-threading which can lead to leaks all too easily.

What is kink in Flexi?

A kink in a flexi is a weak point that can result in a burst over time. Too much stress is put on the one bit. I personally would "bite the bullet" for the sake of a fiver and buy and fit a new one.#N#I know you don’t want to hear this but I hate flexis and only use them when I’m forced to. I don’t see them as a long term installation part. From your post, you are very capable and I think you should use copper and if worried about heat, use compression joints and compression tap adaptors. You’ll get major satisfaction over your extra efforts too!

Can Flexis be used on copper pipes?

I see these flexis as poor substitutes for copper. I don’t use them ever, except on back to wall toilets or if they are on monobloc sink mixers. Beware the ones with valves as some leak. If you have to fit any of them, try to have them nearly full length to the pipe they are joining to & keep pipe end slack until tap end tightened, to avoid twisting it. Why not use brass fittings at copper pipes & use solder tap fittings, try them in with pipes before soldering & solder out of place? Thus avoids flexi.

Why leave a bath in place?

After much discussion, it was decided to leave the bath in place, so as to avoid possibly damaging the tub and walls during removal (we’re talking a VERY tight fit).

Can you buy short Flexi?

You can buy unusually short flexi’s here and there. I’ve got a couple of 15mm onces which are 150mm long. But they were expensive. Bought them in case of areally tight situation where they would be my only option. Had them ages now. One day!

1. How to Uncoil Flexible Copper Tubing

To prepare the tubing for your project, you’ll need about 15 minutes to bend and cut the tubing (for a relatively short run of pipe). You’ll also need (1) a tubing cutter, (2) a coil-spring tubing bender, and (3) some emery cloth.

3. How to Bend Flexible Copper Tubing

Bend the flexible copper pipe in gradual sweeping arcs. If you don’t, it will surprise you by suddenly kinking.

4. Polishing Flexible Copper Tubing

Polishing the flexible copper pipe is your final step before you use it in your plumbing.

Final Thoughts

Working with this kind of tubing is easy and, well, flexible! But here’s a warning: don’t use it for a gas line. Natural gas will cause the inside of the copper tube to flake, which can damage appliances. Otherwise, have at it.

What are they?

They are a method of connecting from the plumbing pipework to the Tap fitting. There is two tails for mixer taps, one carries the hot to the tap and the other the cold. Essentially, they consist of a rubber material (hose) wrapped in a braided metal such as stainless steel. They come in a number of sizes and lengths and are a very convenient method of fitting taps.

How is the tap end connected to the tap?

The tap end is connected to the tap by threading by hand and then nipping up lightly. It is important to tighten correctly but not to over tighten as this can cause leaks. The pipework end of the flexi tail shown above (female connection) is typically threaded onto an isolating valve with a male 1/2″ BSP or else a compression fitting …

Why is it important to cut the flexi tail of a basin tap?

It is important to make sure that the flexi tail is not kinked or rubbing up against any objects. This can cause wear and failure if not rectified. It is also important that the pipework is cut to the right length so that there is no unnecessary kinks or stretching on the flexi tail that could prevent correct threading. If you want a complete guide on how to fit a basin tap, please see here.

Why do you need isolating valves?

It is always recommended to fit isolating valves so that the flow to the tap can be easily stopped for maintenance purposes. Always ensure the pipework is flushed before connecting the tap to the plumbing. This stops debris getting into the tap valves.

What are the advantages of stainless steel?

These connections come with a number of advantages: 1 They are very convenient to fit. 2 They are very strong and can cope with high flow rates. 3 Stainless steel does not corrode. 4 They are better for the environment as the alloy content safely meets the requirements for drinking water. 5 They are recyclable. 6 They look good and can be manipulated by hand to be moved out of view. 7 They are more cost effective then copper tails.

Does stainless steel corrode?

Stainless steel does not corrode. They are better for the environment as the alloy content safely meets the requirements for drinking water. They are recyclable. They look good and can be manipulated by hand to be moved out of view. They are more cost effective then copper tails.
