diyfixit.co.ukImage: diyfixit.co.ukYou can increase the hole size in the fitting if this is possible, say 20mm and use 20mm grommet. Then use a spare terminal connector for the loop feed. You can use5A connector block, provided it is big enough to terminate the size and quantity of conductors that are there, which may not always be the case.

How do you connect light fittings to a switch?

If the light fitting you have purchased has just two cores – live (brown) and neutral (blue), connect the live to the switch live terminal and neutral to the neutral terminal. If the fitting has an earth core, it must be sleeved with a yellow and green coat and connected to the Earth terminal.

What is loop in lighting wiring?

Loop-in lighting wiring is the modern cabling arrangements used in most installation. Generally it uses less materials and is quicker to install than radial (junction box) wiring – it can however, be a bit more complicated to work out the actual wires at a ceiling rose.

How do I fit a light box to the ceiling?

Having said that you will need quite a large hole to fit the box into the ceiling, maybe too big to get good fixings for some light fitting types. You could just use the maintenance free connectors themselves wthout the boxes as the terminals will be in the base of the light fitting anyway.

How do I know if my light fitting has an earth core?

If the light fitting you have purchased has two cores – live (brown) and neutral (blue) connect the live to the switch live terminal and neutral to the neutral terminal. If the fitting has an earth core, it must be sleeved with a yellow and green coat and connected to the Earth terminal.

What color is the old cable?

16. Insert the blue (old cable colour = black) Neutral conductors of the circuit cables, and the blue of the new cable to the light fitting, into another connector.

What is a light fitting?

The most commonly seen light fitting comprises a ceiling rose with a pendant lamp. If you want to change this for a different light fitting , it can present a problem as many light fittings are supplied with only a simple two or three terminal connection and have no allowance for the wires and connections which may be housed inside the ceiling rose.

What color are the conductors on a loop?

Two brown (old cable colour = red) conductors connected to the Loop terminal block. These are the Circuit in and Circuit out live conductors.

What type of circuit is a ceiling rose?

5. If you have more conductors in the ceiling rose, it may be part of a loop type lighting circuit.

Where are the connectors in a Wagobox?

19. Double check your connections then secure the connectors in the junction box. In the Wagobox, these are simply housed in recessed slots at one end of the box.

Can you use a live neutral and earth on a ceiling rose?

If the ceiling rose contains just a Live, Neutral, and Earth, then the job of fitting the new light will be straightforward enough. However if a loop type circuit has been used you will find many more conductors connected at the ceiling rose. This article explains how to remove the ceiling rose and replace it with a suitable junction box mounted in …

What is the loop in wiring arrangement?

1A – This is the most common loop-in wiring arrangement you are likely to see. It shows three cables; one cable (L+N+E) either from the mains board or the last ceiling rose, one cable (L+N+E) out to the next ceiling rose, and one cable (L+S/L +E) that goes to the wall or pull switch within that room. The latter cable is referred to as the switch live (S/L) provides electric to the light when the switch is turned on.

Why does the ceiling rose have one less live?

It has one less live, one less neutral and one less earth core because the loop-in has reached the end and doesn’t need to pass power on to another ceiling rose. If you have to disconnect and remove the cores from the ceiling rose reconnect them as shown in 2B.

What color is the light fitting?

If the light fitting you have purchased has two cores – live (brown) and neutral (blue) connect the live to the switch live terminal and neutral to the neutral terminal. If the fitting has an earth core, it must be sleeved with a yellow and green coat and connected to the Earth terminal.

What colors are used for a ceiling rose?

Note that the colours shown connected to the ceiling rose are the old standard – red, black and yellow and green, the modern standard being brown, blue and yellow and green (the yellow and green being the earth connector which is typically uninsulated but fitted with a yellow and green sleeving.)

What is loop in wiring?

Loop-in lighting wiring is the modern cabling arrangements used in most installation. Generally it uses less materials and is quicker to install than radial (junction box) wiring – it can however, be a bit more complicated to work out the actual wires at a ceiling rose.

What does 3A mean in wiring?

3A – This wiring arrangement would indicate the presence of two lights in a room on the same light switch. If there were one less red (live),one less black (neutral) and one less yellow/green (earth), this would indicate that this is the end of the loop.

What color goes in one bit of connection block?

the two browns in the left go in one bit of connection block, the 3 or 4 browns out the middle go in abit of connection block. and the blues on the right go in one bit, also all the earths (green and yellow) go in one bit.

Where is the 4th set of wires in a ring/loop circuit?

Where a ring/loop circuit exists there will be a 4th set of wires (usually red) that are not connected to the L, N or E of the fitting. The circuit must be kept together in the 4th terminal of the connection block, and insulated from the fitting and the other wires.

How many cores are in a ceiling rose?

On the picture of ceiling rose you will see a centre terminal with three brown cores in, look carefully it is marked "loop in" (just behind the three cables) those conductors are all permanently live.

How many terminals does a sprite go into?

They will all go in to one of the 4 terminals, of the 4 terminal block pictured.

What are green and yellow cores?

The green and yellow cores are CPC/earths and all go in to the last empty terminal.

Does Ashley Rock do a surface mounted m/trunk entry pattrice?

Ashley rock do a surface mounted M/Trunk entry pattrice that you can fit a ceiling rose to, also good for fitting most light fittings, provides plenty of room for connections, nice and safe! other makes are available but can be hard to find in some wholesalers. Always keep a few on the van. Reply. 1. 2.

Can you use a ceiling rose as a barrier?

Reg 559.11.6 says you can use "clamping devices". And reg 416.2.4 states in notes that a ceiling rose is not classed as a barrier. In my eyes that’s accessible junction.

Can you tape up choc blocks?

Never tape up choc blocks! Use the correct junction box/connector for the job. Look at Wagobox Home of The Maintenance Free Junction Box (other brands are available in all good electrical wholesalers).

Can you get 3 cable ends in one terminal?

you have to replace the choc block that comes with the fitting (as you can’t get 3 cable ends in to one terminal) with a bigger one. connect up and find that there is not room in the fitting for the larger terminal block. happy days.

Can you get all the wires in a fitting?

I find you can usually get all the wires in the fitting; most even provide an ‘extra’ terminal for the loop.

Looking to replace several standard loop-in ceiling roses with light fittings that fit direct to the ceiling. These new lamps have only terminals for L,N & E and a small hole with grommet in the base plate that would only allow a bit of flex through.

the sparks New Member

You can increase the hole size in the fitting if this is possible, say 20mm and use 20mm grommet. Then use a spare terminal connector for the loop feed.

billyelecs New Member

My advice would be to use flex into loft, terminated into a 20amp junction box.Its easy for putting up light fitting, and it ensures the circuit will always be intact would never use terminal blocks if i can help it, certainly not 5amp they never work. min 15amp for comfort.

I would use 3 x 3-way Lever WAGOs for the Loop-in/Loop-out and a 2-way lever WAGO for the ‘Switched Live from the light switch. These could all fit in the ceiling void with a single feed coming from the Neutral, Earth and Switched Live block.

JP. Screwfix Select

You know those 3 lever Wagos..are they approx the same size as say a 3 wide 5 Amp term strip?

JP. Screwfix Select

Eye thanks a lot M8..appreciated. Probably about the same size (or maybe slightly less in some planes then the term strip)..I might get some of those and swap over in my boxes..as it looks abysmal with those term blocks covered in tape.

Is E-Bay the best source, or is there anywhere cheaper for those Wago’s?

What residues does a phenix fit loop start with?

This will fit a loop starting with residue 37 and ending with residue 43 in nsf_gap.pdb. phenix.fit_loops will expect that your existing nsf_gap.pdb model has a chain ending at residue 36 and another starting at residue 44. As chain_id=None in this example, if there are multiple chains A,B,C in nsf_gap.pdb then all 3 will be filled in.

What is fit_loops?

fit_loops is a tool for building a loop into density to connect existing chain ends. You supply a model with a gap and a sequence file and coefficients for an electron density map, and you specify the first and last residues to be built. Then fit_loops will attempt to build the loop that you specify. One loop can be done at a time with fit_loops (but if you have multiple identical chains, you can fit them all at once).

What is the minimum correlation for a loop with poor density?

If you want to try and fit a loop with poor density, you might want to lower the threshold for the correlation of density in the loop (default minimum correlation is 0.2 ):

How does fit_loops work?

fit_loops calculates a map based on the supplied map coefficients, then tries to extend the ends of the supplied model into the gap region, following the electron density in the map.
